Wonder how to deal with tightness in the hips that hold you or your students back in their yoga practice? Yoga poses that create greater balance in the hip joint are some of the most rewarding yoga poses, but they are often challenging, particularly for beginning yoga students.

Creating greater balance in the hip joint is a key to improving alignment in many yoga poses by strenghtenint and softening the muscles and connective tissue around the hips. Hip-balancing poses also help prepare the body for many backbend poses, as well as seated postures like Padmasana (Lotus Pose). When not practiced correctly, however, hip-balancing poses can discourage beginning yoga students or even lead to injuries.

The benefits of hip-balancing yoga postures go beyond one’s yoga practice, however. Keeping the hip supple can help you ease back pain or avoid it altogether, and it will help ensure mobility and agility as you get older.

Beyond that, among all the different types of yoga poses, hip-balancing poses  are known as one of the most powerful groups of poses for releasing deep-seated stress, tension and negative emotions, which many of us tend to store in the pelvic area.

In this two-part class on the anatomy and therapeutics of the hip joint, Judith Hanson Lasater shares some of the key principles for creating greater freedom in the hip joint. Because the soft tissues surrounding the hip are some of the strongest in the body, hip-balancing poses must be done with careful awareness and attentiveness. Judith addresses some of the key individual differences in the anatomy of the hip joint, which shape our yoga practice and show how to adjust poses accordingly.
