Yoga, Neuroplasticity and Pain: New Hope for Self-Empowerment and Healing

Back Health

Pain is a complex and troublesome human experience that involves the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Pain strikes everyone from time to time, but millions of people suffer with pain year in and year out.

According to modern pain neuroscience, however, we may have greater influence over the experience of pain than previously thought. One of the best ways to safely and effectively manage the pain experience is to better understand its mechanism in the light of new insights into brain neuroplasticity.

Join physical therapists and yoga therapists Neil Pearson and Shelly Prosko for a 3-part webinar (two lectures and a yoga practice) on what modern neuroscience and yoga research teaches us about the ability to change pain, even in people with complex pain conditions.  Yoga offers numerous techniques that are useful for managing pain, and it can provide the lived experience that pain can be changed, and that we can learn to move with ease in the face of pain.

Neil and Shelly will discuss the physiology of pain from the perspective of new findings on neuroplasticity and pain, and also will guide you in a series of yoga techniques that can be helpful to change the experience of pain.

Because each of us is very unique, there is no specific protocol or yoga sequence for ‘yoga for pain’; but the concepts can be translated to any asana practice or individual. The techniques can be modified to suit the type of yoga class or the individual and are equally important for injury prevention as well as pain care.

What you will learn

  • The purpose of pain, and the meaning of pain intensity, quality and location.
