The Yamas and the Niyamas are the first two facets of  the Eight-Limbed Path of Yoga described in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra. They are thought to be some of the most practical Sutras as they assist us in living our lives in a life-supporting way, honoring the highest principles of life at each moment. 

Often, the Yamas and Niyamas are referred to as the “Do’s and Don’ts of Yoga” or sometimes the “Ten Commandments of Yoga”.

However, this is taking highly refined principles for living and reducing them to a finger-shaking image: “ If you do not do this or that, you will be punished.”

When observed on a subtler level, the Yamas and Niyamas seem to be more of a tribute to Being, affirming our already Divine nature.
